01 / The Challenge

The Challenge

Obesity is complex, personal, and often difficult to talk about. Lilly had developed a patient guide covering the condition, its effects on health, and considerations around treatment. The information was important, but there was a lot for patients to take in at once, particularly around a subject that can already carry uncertainty and stigma.

02 / The Shift

The Shift We Made

We looked at the guide from the patient’s point of view. User testing and a structured health literacy review helped us see where people were getting slowed down, which information was difficult to scan, and where the design could do more of the explanatory work.

03 / The Work

How We Did It

  • Conducted remote testing with nine participants, focusing on clarity, organization, and usability
  • Evaluated the guide using a health literacy scorecard
  • Refined typography, hierarchy, page flow, and visual callouts to make dense sections easier to navigate
  • Recommended plain-language and visual changes based on current health literacy practices
  • Used photography and approachable supporting graphics to keep a clinically detailed guide from feeling overly clinical

04 / What Happened Next

What Happened Next

The revised guide gave complex sections a clearer hierarchy and page flow
Visual callouts made important information easier to scan
Photography and supporting graphics gave the clinically detailed material a more approachable tone

05 / Why It Mattered

Why It Mattered

Patients were being asked to absorb a great deal of information and use it to make decisions about their health. The revised guide made that information easier to find, easier to understand, and easier to bring into a conversation with a provider.

The story is already there.
Let’s tell it well.
